Office Chair Shipping CBM, Carton Packing and MOQ Guide

Short answer

Calculate shipping volume from the packed cartons, not the assembled chair. Carton CBM equals length × width × height in metres. Multiply by the number of cartons; calculate each model separately and add the totals. Gross weight and a practical loading plan must also be checked before booking.

Many chair factories plan production around component batches and container orders. MOQ is therefore a production question, not just a sales rule. Packing volume can change the landed cost as much as a small unit-price difference.

1. Get a packing specification for each configuration

Ask for the final outer carton dimensions, units per carton and gross weight per carton. A headrest, different base, extra hardware or different packing method can change these figures even when the chair looks similar. Use the approved production pack, not a showroom measurement.

  • Record length, width, height and measurement unit
  • Record chairs per carton and carton gross weight
  • Separate headrest, base, colour or model variants when their packing differs
  • Include separately packed spares, accessories and pallets

2. Calculate carton count, CBM and gross weight

Cartons = chair quantity ÷ chairs per carton, rounded up to whole cartons. With measurements in centimetres, carton CBM = length × width × height ÷ 1,000,000. Total carton CBM = cartons × carton CBM. Total gross weight = cartons × gross weight per carton.

Illustration only: 300 chairs, two per carton, with a 60 × 50 × 60 cm carton and 24 kg gross weight per carton give 150 cartons, 0.18 CBM per carton, 27 CBM in total and 3,600 kg gross weight. These are invented teaching inputs, not specifications for any Anji DAD model.

For an odd quantity, rounding up assumes the last carton uses the same external dimensions and full-carton weight. Replace that estimate when the supplier confirms the partial-carton pack. Keep precision through the calculation and round the final result.

  • Do not multiply a two-chair carton volume by the number of chairs
  • Do not use chair net weight as carton gross weight
  • Do not round each carton volume down before multiplying
  • Calculate each different carton type as its own line

3. Turn the totals into a loading plan

CBM describes volume; it does not prove how many cartons fit a container. Carton orientation, stacking limits, door clearance, pallets, protective space and weight distribution can all reduce the usable load. Ask for a loading layout using the actual packaging and the booked equipment.

For mixed models, calculate every packing line independently and add CBM and gross weight. Ask the forwarder to confirm equipment suitability, cargo limits, handling requirements and the applicable freight basis. A calculator result is not a freight quote or a container booking.

  • Request a carton layout or previous loading record for the same pack
  • Confirm allowable stacking and whether cartons may be rotated
  • Include pallet and outer-protection dimensions when used
  • Reconcile the final packing list before booking

4. Compare MOQ and packaging together

Factory, component and colour minimums can differ. Ask separately about standard models, custom materials, logos and packaging. A trial order or mixed-model shipment needs its own confirmation; a low total quantity does not automatically satisfy each component minimum.

Compare a compact pack against the added assembly work, packaging cost and damage protection. Lower CBM alone is not a reason to remove necessary protection.

  • Model and colour quantity split
  • Standard versus custom component availability
  • Sample and production packing differences
  • Assembly instructions, hardware protection and replacement parts

5. Send a complete freight enquiry

Send the collection location, destination port and final delivery address, shipment window, carton count, outer dimensions, units per carton and gross weight. For a delivered quotation, provide the district or postcode and access or unloading requirements. Ask the forwarder to itemise the route and services included.

  • Pickup, origin handling and export arrangements
  • Main transport and destination handling
  • Import clearance and any applicable taxes quoted separately
  • Final delivery, unloading and quotation validity

General procurement guidance. Product specifications, commercial terms and inspection acceptance criteria require confirmation for the selected order.

Buyer questions

Should I use chair dimensions or carton dimensions for freight?

Use final outer packing dimensions. Assembled chair dimensions describe the product, not the shipping space.

How do I calculate two chairs per carton?

Divide the chair quantity by two to find the carton count, round up where necessary, then multiply by the volume and gross weight of one carton.

Can I divide total CBM by a container volume to book it?

That gives a volume-only estimate. Confirm carton orientation, stacking, pallets, weight limits and a loading layout with the supplier and forwarder first.

Can different chair models share a shipment?

Possibly. Calculate each carton type separately and confirm consolidation, production timing, packing compatibility and export arrangements.

Does this calculator give an ocean freight price?

No. It estimates carton volume and gross weight from your inputs. Freight and delivery require a current quotation for the actual route and packing.
